Man gets 10-year RI for locking wife's private parts
Chouhan’s cruelty had come to light after his wife tried to commit suicide by consuming poison.
INDORE: The district court on Friday sentenced a 45-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for putting a ‘chastity lock’ on his wife’s private parts.

Special additional sessions judge A K Singh found Sohan Lal Chouhan guilty under sections 326 (causing grievous hurt) and 498 A (subjecting married woman to cruelty) of the IPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him.

Public prosecutor Jyoti Tomar said Chouhan was arrested in July 2012. Out of the 14 witnesses presented before the court, three — including the couple’s son and daughter — had turned hostile. “However, the son admitted Chouhan hadn’t allowed him to meet his mother in the last four years,” Tomar said. “Besides, the statements of the doctor who had removed the ‘lock’, the policeman who had recovered the key from Chouhan and an independent witness helped in nailing Chouhan.”

Chouhan’s cruelty had come to light after his wife tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. While trying to insert a tube to extract the poison, hospital doctors were stunned to see the ‘locked’ genitals. She then revealed her husband had performed a crude surgery on her to ‘lock’ her private parts four years ago. In a statement, she said he suspected her of having an extramarital relationship.

The woman was married to Chouhan when she was 16 years old. She had consumed pesticide after Chouhan tried to rape their elder daughter.

Rejected by the married woman he was trying to woo, a 30-year-old man attacks her and a friend with a can of insecticide and a lighter; women suffer serious burns but are out of danger

The Samtanagar police have arrested a 30-year-old man, Sachin Gangaram Shigvan, for assaulting and attemtping to kill a woman and a friend who tried to rescue her.

Shradha Landge (23) and Minal Zeman (36) suffered serious burn injuries after Sachin attacked them with a can of insecticide and a lighter, but are out of danger. This is the latest in a spate of horrific attacks on women in Mumbai, and echoes the recent case of Jerrit John, an ad film-maker who threw acid on the face of a girl who rejected him.

According to the police, Sachin, who lost his wife and son two years ago, both to prolonged illnesses, had been attracted to Shrasha even before she got married. According to Shradha, he had been actively wooing her for the past four months, but in vain.

Since Shradha refused to leave her husband, Sachin tried a different tack – he befriended her husband and began telling both spouses made-up stories about the other’s infidelity. “This went on for a long time and caused many misunderstandings between my husband and I. But finally we understood that it was all Sachin’s doing,” said Shradha.

On Sunday, Shradha and her husband Shashikant, an auto driver, called Sachin for a chat over a cup of tea and tried to convince him to forget about Shradha. Sachin reacted angrily and started to abuse the two. Furious, Shashikant slapped him twice and threw him out of the house. On his way out, Sachin told them that he would get back at them.

On Tuesday morning, he returned for revenge. Around 11 am on Tuesday, Shradha was at her neighbour Shabana‘s house. Shabana and her watched TV while another friend, Minal Zeman (36) washed clothes outside. Sachin barged in and told Shabana to get out of the house. He said that Shradha had destroyed his life and now he would do the same to her.

As soon as Shabana fled, Sachin locked the door, unaware that Minal had already sneaked in and was hiding behind a curtain. Sachin was carrying a can of insecticide, which he sprayed on Shradha before setting fire to her. Shradha’s face, neck, left shoulder, and hair were burnt in the attack. Seeing her friend in trouble, Minal emerged and tried to douse the fire. Sachin warned Minal that if she did not leave, she would suffer the same fate as Shradha. Minal however refused to leave her friend’s side.

Sachin then tried to spray and burn her as well. Minal suffered burns but managed to run towards the door. When she opened it, she saw a large crowd gathered outside. People immediately rushed in to rescue to two women and nab Sachin. Sachin later told the police that he had intended to burn Shradha alive. Senior Inspector Nanasaheb Kamble of Samtanagar police station said, “The accused will be produced in court tomorrow. Both victims have been admitted to a hospital in Kandivali.”

Duped by Pak husband, Indian woman yearns to return home #VAW

Karachi: An Indian woman, who left her country and religion to marry a Pakistani man, claims that her husband has locked her up in a small room on the roof of their house here for the past 13 years.

Shirley Ann Hodges married Gul Muhammad Khan, a Pakistani money lender, after meeting him in Ahmedabad, in Gujarat, in the summer of 1997. She changed her name to Shabnam Gul Khan and came to Pakistan in 2000 with her new-born daughter. At the time, Khan said they were going to Pakistan to meet his family and that they would return to India within six months.

However, as soon as Shabnam landed in Karachi, she was abruptly introduced to Khan’s first wife and their six children, she told The Express Tribune.

Shabnam’s Indian passport was seized and she was given a burqa and locked away on the top floor of her in-laws’ home.

Shabnam has been confined in the top floor of the house for the past 13 years and is not allowed any visitors.

Her only contact with the outside world is through the internet and her mobile phone, the Tribune reported.

“I am a prisoner and this is a hell. For years, I have not gone out from my room. I want to go back to my family in India,” she said.

Shabnam’s sister-in-law, who lives in the same five-storey house in Landhi area of Karachi, said, “Shabnam observes purdah. She cannot meet anyone.” The woman, however, said she was being forced to remain indoors.

“I don’t know why my husband did this to me, why he fooled me. What was my fault? My daughters are not allowed to go to school. We are beaten with sticks and hurled abuses. Our life is very suffocating,” she said.

For years, Shabnam was forced to hide her husband’s cruelty from her family as she could only speak to them in front of him.

A few months ago, Shabnam managed to get through to her family independently by using Skype.

Speaking from Ahmedabad, Shabnam’s brother Noel Hodges said he was shocked when he saw her after all these years. “She weighs

100 kg now. She keeps crying all the time. We are very worried for her,” he said. Shabnam’s family has made frantic efforts for her release.

Letters have been written to the Indian Home Secretary, the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad and Pakistani human rights campaigner Asma Jahangir.

In Karachi, Abdul Hai of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said his organisation had received letters about Shabnam and was seeking legal help.

After police questioned Khan about his wife, he filed a petition in Sindh High Court last month and accused police of harassing him.

“We observe strict purdah in our family, which is why Shabnam is not allowed to go out,” said Khan, who owns an electronics shop.

He claimed that he had done a “great deed” by converting a non-Muslim to Islam.

“I am a heart patient. When I become alright, I will take her to India but for now she has to take care of me,” he said. Shabnam claimed her husband’s promises of taking her back to India will be broken again.

“I regret marrying him, and the day I come out, I will file a case against him and make him suffer the same way,” she said.
