Singapore: The 23-year-old girl, who put up a brave battle for life after she was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a Delhi bus on December 16 that had created a nationwide outrage, died on Saturday morning in a hospital here.

The girl, who was admitted to the well-known multi-organ transplant facility Mount Elizabeth Hospital here on Thursday morning in an extremely critical condition, breathed her last at 4:45 am (2:15 am India time). She was earlier treated at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

The Commission of Inquiry under the Chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Usha Mehra has requested the members of public to provide any information about the shocking incident of rape and brutal assault on a young woman in New Delhi on December 16.

“Any information, suggestions and responses may be sent through email at usha.mehracommission@nic.in or through Fax at 011-23093750 latest by January 10, 2013,” said a Home Ministry release.

All the members of the public including jurists, legal professionals, NGOs, media persons/ journalists, women groups are requested to suggest measures to improve the safety and security of women particularly in the National Capital Territory of Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).

The commission will suggest measures to make Delhi and NCR safer for women. It will submit its report within three months, which will be tabled in Parliament along with action taken by the government.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim has significant brain injury, infection in lungs and abdomen and she is currently struggling against all odds at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital where her condition continues to be ‘extremely critical’.

New Delhi: A man has been sentenced to eight years in jail by a Delhi court for repeatedly raping his 12-year-old daughter in 2011. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Garg held Delhi resident Man Singh Thapa guilty of raping his daughter, dismissing his claim that he was 70 years old and could not have committed the offence as he has turned impotent due to his age.

“It is a case of incest as the girl is real daughter of the convict. As per the girl, the convict had raped her number of times as and when he wished to do so…The convict, who is the father and and custodian of the girl, kept on raping her at his pleasure. It is not a case of isolated incident rather the convict sexually abused his daughter as and when he got opportunity,” the court said.

According to prosecution, the girl with the help of her sister had approached the police in 2011 alleging that her father used to rape her and on resisting, he would beat her. It said the girl’s mother had died five years ago and since then she was residing with her sister and father, who was in the profession of white washing.

The girl had told the court that Thapa was in a habit of consuming alcohol daily and thereafter he would rape her as and when he desired. She had said after being fed up with her father’s act, she disclosed about the incident to her neighbours, who suggested her to approach the police.

Thapa, in his defence, had said he was falsely implicated in the case by her daughter as she wanted to marry a boy, belonging to a different religion, and he was against it. He had also claimed that he was 70-year-old and he could not have raped his daughter as
