– MAGDALINE VOLAITIS (photo on right) Magdaline works closely with Mary Ellen Copeland as the Outreach Director for WRAP and Recovery Books. Survey Resists Mental Health System Hopelessness #mustread

Early Results: Yes, There is Hope After a   Psychiatric Diagnosis!

MindFreedom “I Got Better” Survey on
Mental Health Gets Great Initial Response.

Haven’t Taken the Survey Yet? Please Do!

When someone — often a young person — gets their first psychiatric diagnosis, it can feel hopeless.

MindFreedom International’s “Hope in Mental Health Care Survey” is off to a great start.

Part of an “I Got Better” campaign, more than 1,000 have already taken this few-minute-long introductory survey, sharing their opinions and experiences of hope and hopelessness in mental health care.

Haven’t responded yet? Help make the survey response even bigger and better!

Click here to take the brief survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/mfi-igb-intro

Feel free to share the survey link widely with your friends and social networks.

The “Hope in Mental Health Care” survey launched the I Got Better campaign, an ongoing project defying the all-too-common message that recovery from mental and emotional distress is impossible.

Some exciting preliminary results from the survey are in:

• 97.7% of survey respondents with a psychiatric history have experienced at least some recovery from a mental health or emotional problem.

• 65.2% ranked themselves as “8” or higher on a recovery scale, and 21.5% ranked themselves as “10” (“fully recovered”).

• 63.9% of all survey respondents strongly agreed that “With proper care nearly all people diagnosed with a mental health or emotional problem can recover.”

The I Got Better campaign will make stories of recovery and data about hope in mental health care (drawn largely from the survey) available through a variety of media, including its own new website:

http://igotbetter.org

You can help this campaign go viral. Through the I Got Better Campaign, these and other important data will be publicized widely, combating harmful messages of stigma and hopelessness.

That new I Got Better web site now has a call for you to submit your own video story of mental health recovery, which could some day save the life of someone getting a psychiatric label, such as a youth or young adult.

The more survey responses MindFreedom can collect, the stronger the data on hope in mental health care will be!

PLEASE FORWARD this update to your friends, colleagues, and web networks.

Press Release

For immediate release
Coalition of Individuals with Psychiatric Labels Supports Protestors’ Efforts to “Occupy” the American Psychiatric Association Convention
WASHINGTON, DC (5/3/12) – The National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery(NCMHR), a coalition comprising 32 statewide organizations of individuals in recovery from mental health conditions, supports an upcoming peaceful protest of theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the controversial “bible” of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). On Saturday, May 5, 2012, as thousands of psychiatrists congregate in Philadelphia for the APA Annual Meeting, individuals with psychiatric labels and others will converge in a global campaign to oppose the APA’s proposed new edition, the DSM-5, scheduled for publication in May 2013.
Occupy the APA will include distinguished speakers 10 a.m. to noon at Friends Center (1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia), and a march at approximately 12:15 p.m. to the Pennsylvania Convention Center (12th and Arch Streets), where the group will protest from approximately 1 p.m. while the APA meets inside. The event is co-sponsored by numerous organizations, including MindFreedom International, the National Mental Health Consumers’ Self-Help Clearinghouse, and the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights.
“In particular, we are dismayed by the proposed expansion of psychiatric labels to include nearly every facet of human experience,” said Daniel B. Fisher, MD, PhD, NCMHR board member and a psychiatrist who himself recovered from schizophrenia. “This move to pathologize understandable human reactions to life’s stressors is a very dangerous trend, which could result in the indiscriminate use of medication and the discounting of such factors as poverty, unemployment and trauma.”
NCMHR holds that psychiatric labeling is a pseudoscientific practice of limited value in helping people recover. Studies have shown that psychiatric diagnosis and labeling can result in increased stigma and discrimination in employment, housing, and community relationships.
NCMHR believes that psychiatric labels obscure the socioeconomic and political roots of much of human suffering, and discount the lived experience of people struggling to cope with the effects of trauma in their lives.
“Mental health services should move away from a bio-psychiatric approach, such as the one enshrined in the DSM, to one that is trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and led by people with the lived experience of mental health recovery,” said NCMHR director Lauren Spiro. “We need to better understand the oppressive dynamics embedded in our culture that bring about great emotional distress, and dispense more compassion and fewer labels.”
