journalist-Soorinje

Mangalore: June 14; The State Government has dropped all charges against journalist Naveen Soorinje in connection with the Morning Mist home stay attack Recently The Visual Media Journalists Association of Dakshina Kannada district had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to drop all charges against journalist Naveen Soorinje and TV cameraman Sharan in connection with the Morning Mist home stay attack.

As per the Cabinet meet on Thursday June 13 it was decided to withdraw cases registered against journalist Naveen Soorinje in the Morning Mist Home Stay attack .
Advocate M P Amruthesh had filed public interest litigation in the state high court on February 6, challenging the state cabinet’s January 31 decision to withdraw case standing against Soorinje.
But the state High Court had, based on an affidavit that Soorinje was not involved with illegal activities at the venue, granted bail to him thereafter on March 23.

Complaint- Radio advertisement of  R City  Mall using name of activist Medha Patkar

I was aghast to listen to your advertisement on Red FM between 1545 hrs and 1555 hrs on May  23rd 2013. The R City Mall, shamelessly names Medha  Patkar,  of Narmada Bachao Andolan , the activist enjoying shopping at R City Mall. I contacted  Medha Patkar and she denied completely giving any consent to the R city Mall   using her name. Even the Radio Station RED FM, with tag line Bajate Raho , have ignored such a big  blunder  in the advertisement

Medha  Patkar is a name which resonates  with rights of  slumdwellers   in Mumbai and she is last person to endorse and shop at Malls. She has   been fighting the Builder Mafia and has stood like a rock against the  islum demolitiosn for many years now and recently had been on a ten day  hunger strike against  the Golibar demolitions, which have were stopped due the  relentless efforts of NAPM.

R City has defamed Medha Patkar by using her name in their promotional advertisement for the Mall.

The advertisement should be immediately  withdrawn  , and the Mall and Radio channel need to tender a public apology  with immediate effect.

People should oppose FDI in retail: Mahasweta Devi #mustshare

Kolkata, May 21 — Supporting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee‘s decision to withdraw from the UPA last September on the issue of FDI in retail, eminent writer Mahasweta Devi Tuesday exhorted people from all walks of life to protest against the measure.

“Of course, I support our chief minister’s decision to withdraw from the centre on FDI. I think everybody should protest against it. People from all walks of life should contribute in their own way in standing up against it,” Mahasweta Devi said while launching a book “FDI-Gobhir Shorjontror Shikar Aamra” (FDI-We are a target of conspiracy).

The 89-year-old Jnanpith awardee suggested tapping into indigenous resources for India‘s growth and development.

“We have sufficient resources. If we use them properly then India can walk on a path of progress and development,” she said.

Mahasweta Devi said she was “somewhat satisfied” with the state government’s stance on introduction of foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail.

Commending the Trinamool Congress for “trying” to bring about changes during its two years in power, she said it is too early to comment on its impact.

“It’s too early to comment. It has just completed two years. It hasn’t done too good or anything worth praising nor it has done anything bad worth criticising.

“It’s trying… let’s just say that,” she added.

Trinamool Congress Monday completed two years in power in West Bengal.

Protests against Maruti Suzuki management and Haryana Government’s pro-capitalist stance

Check out video of the protests by Maruti Suzuki workers and activists in front of Haryana Bhavan in Delhi on May 18th:

Different organizations including Maruti Suzuki Workers Union, KNS (Krantikari Nawjana Sabha) and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) have been behind the protests going on for several months against the repressive measures by the Maruti Suzuki Management as well as the Haryana government under Chief Minister Hooda. The Haryana Government has unleashed brutal aggression on the peaceful protesters, who have been demanding the immediate release of all those arrested under false premises, most recently on the night of May 19th, to prevent workers from joining a dharna the next day on May 20th. Despite the arrests to try and intimidate the Maruti Suzuki Workers and activists, the protest in front of Haryana Bhavan went on as planned. But once again the Hooda Government showed its true color by exposing its dirty nexus with the capitalists.

On May 20, when the protesters tried to reach the ministers’ office, they were attacked by policemen who lathicharged the unarmed protesters, injuring several of them, while some were reportedly arrested as well.

Maruti Suzuki Workers Protest

The demands are absolutely legitimate, since it is the legal and ethical right of workers to get organized. But the Maruti Suzuki management has created the trouble by not allowing the workers to form their new union. Instead, with help from the Hooda government, MarutiSuzuki management fired several permanent workers, who are still jobless (thanks to the jobless “growth” under the neo liberal economic onslaught anyway). Many workers  and activists have been threatened by the police and harassed, like arresting them from their homes and that too late at night. This naturally helps because when they nab the protesters individually, they are at their vulnerable most. Therefore, the workers are demanding immediate reinstatement of the fired permanent workers and making all the casual ones permanent with immediate effect. Activists suggest that this movement has been one of the brightest examples of working class unity in recent times, whereby not only casual workers’ rights have come to the fore from permanent workers but also the highly spirited way the workers are protesting from an anti capitalist viewpoint.

Join GHERAO of Industries Minister residence on 19th May in Kaithal

MARUTI SUZUKI WORKERS UNION

Reg. no. 1923

IMT Manesar

Ref. No. …                                                                                                     Date: 18 May 2013

We appeal to all workers, workers and peasant organisations, trade unions and democratic forces and individuals to JOIN us in Kaithal at 11am on 19th May 2013, on our call to GHERAO of the residence of Industries Minister, Haryana, Randip Singh Surjewala.

On 8th May, the Mahapanchayat in Kaithal, which saw solidarity participation of more than 2000 people from across the state and country, gave a memorandum and an ultimatum to the Government of Haryana of 10 days from that date to heed to the demands of our struggle. 19th May will be the 57th day of the continuing dharna from 24 March 2013, throughout which we have only peacefully exercised our democratic right to protest (we were not allowed to even do a dharna in Gurgaon or Manesar). This included an 8-day fast-unto-death which we halted temporarily only after the assurance of the Chief Minister, Bhupiner Hooda that the government will favourably look into the demands and negotiation with the company restarted.

But the government has exposed itself by again paying scant regard to any of our demands. It has instead stepped up coercion on those who have come in our solidarity. The grants to 84 Village Panchayat sarpanch from across Haryana who came out in solidarity on 8th May in Kaithal have been stopped and they have been blacklisted for support to ‘anti-government activities’. Besides this, in an effort to stop our call for demonstration tomorrow, Section 144 has been slapped from 5pm on 18th May to continue till night 12 o’clock on 19th May, and hundreds of police in battle-gear and tear-gas have been posted threateningly next to the site of the dharna.

The government and its state administration has become pro-active to this degree to crush our struggle even after 10 months, when we fight for our legitimate demands of release of the jailed 147 workers, stop to police persecution and reinstatement of the terminated 546 permanent and 1800 contract workers. What it fears is the uncomfortable questions we have put before it, from our experience, that the scenario of decent employment is bleak and that the present model of development is essentially anti-worker and anti-people. Even as the government is supposed to represent our interests, what is fears is the unity of permanent and contract workers, the unity of common toiling people who have seen through its naked collusion with exploitative companies at the cost of our livelihood and dignity. And so throughout the phase of our struggle against the exploitation by the Maruti Suzuki company, we have continuously at all instances found the state administration and our elected representatives to bend over backwards to please the company management, and do all it could to repress our voices for justice.

JOIN us on 19th May 2013 at Kaithal to raise our voice against the exploitation by the Maruti Suzuki company and the open support that the Government of Haryana lends it, and demand immediate release of all 147 jailed workers, withdrawal of false non-bailable arrest warrants against 66 workers and all other fabricated cases, reinstatement of 546 permanent and 1800 contract workers, independent impartial enquiry into the incident of 18th July 2012.

Revolutionary Greetings

No demolitions of the 6 projects untill the enquiry is complete

GaneshKrupa Society land belongs to the residents : decision of the joint meeting

Mandala to be the pilot project of Rajiv Awas Yojana of Mumbai

Process of slum declaration and providing civic amenities will happen according to the earlier agreement between Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan and Govt. of Maharashtra

All conditions of the LOI to be complied with and in cases of fraud documents it will be withdrawn

On the 9th day of Medha Patkar and Madhuri Shivkar’s fast at Golibar, Mumbai, Sh. Pritviraj Chavan, Chief Minister, Maharashtra intervened. After a meaningful meeting and written assurances by the Principal Secretary(Housing) and CEO, SRA followed by a meeting and agreement to the demands by the Chief Minister, Medha patkar and Madhuri Shivkar call off the fast at 1 AM on 13thApril, 2013, but the struggle will continue to ensure proper implementation of the decisions.

Earlier in the day on April 12, thousands of supporters and Slum Dwellers reached to the door step of Chief Minister Bunglow and protested there the whole day, which forced the Chief Minister to agree on the demands on the 9th day of the fast.

A delegation consisted of Sh. ChandraShekhar, Architect, Vidya Bal, Editor, Miloon Saryajani (a Marathi Magazine), Pushpa Dave, Writer, Anjali Damania, Sumit Wajale, Prerna Gaikwad, Ajit Gavkhedkar and residents of Golibar and other slums in Mumbai met the Chief Minister.

The fast started on 4th April, 2013 after demolition of 70+ houses of GaneshKrupa Society, Golibar with the following demands:-

1.       The enquiry in respect of 6 S.R.A. Projects, under the chairmanship of Principal secretary, Housing, is in progress since 13th January, 2013. We demand that the work in all these projects should be stopped untill the report of the enquiry is completed and actions taken on the recommendations.

2.       If demolitions are being carried out in accordance with court rulings but the preconditions put forth are not met, main issues and allegations of corruption through forgery, fraudulent consent are not resolved etc., then in such cases project work should be stopped and no further demolitions be carried.

3.       In cases where the residents have submitted self development projects or wish to submit the same, they should be sanctioned and encourgaed and started immediately.

4.       S.R.A. Should ensure that in case of ongoing S.R.A. Projects all conditions in L.O.I. should be complied with.

5.       The L.O.I. of the developer should be withdrawn wherever the developers have submitted forged / false documents or wrong information in violation of the L.O.I – as in case of Shivalik builders.

6.       The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has agreed to implement ‘Rajeev Awas Yojana’ in the slums of Mumbai instead of S.R.A., on 2nd January, 2013. However these very slums are being buldozed even today. So, the displacement of these slums should be stopped till R.A.Y. is implemented. The same was conveyed to the State Government by the Union Minister Ajay maken on April 2, 2013.

7.       Pilot projects in respect of slum at Mandala, Mankhurd under the R.A.Y. Have already been submiited to the state as well as Central Governments. That should be approved and implemented at the earliest.

8.       Civic amenities (like water, toilets, nallahs, roads ) should be provided to all the slums immediately as per the written assurance given by the Municipal Commissioner.

9.       The Chief Secretary had given a written assurance on 25th May, 2011 that 19 bastis as agreed in the list, after 9 day fast by Medha Patkar, will be decalred slums within 3 months. There is no action on this assurance till date. The same should be done. The Chief Minister, and the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Housing had premised again in January, 2013 to complete this action during discussions held with them. They also gave a written assurance to that effect. The displacements that are being carried out at present are, therefore, grossly unjust and hence should be stopped forthwith.

10.    Shri Ajay Maken, Minister for Housing and Urban poverty alleviation, Government of India has written a letter to the Chief Minister, Maharashtra state on 2nd April, 2013. The Chief Minister should declare his stand on the letter in writing.

11.    The land of Sathe Nagar should be given for R.A.Y. . This land is currently under the hold of Bombay Soap company.

Chief Minister Agreed to the Following :-

1.      On the issue of Ganesh Krupa Society’s Land: The residents of the Society has paid the amount towards the cost of the land to the government which they agreed. Without the consent of the residents the land cannot be developed. A Joint Meeting within a week will decide about the development of the land.

2.      Rehabilitation building has been constructed on the Defence land which is under court process. No one at the rehabilitation site will be homeless even if defence wins the case. MHADA and Government of Maharashtra will look into the matter.

3.      No demolition untill the enquiry is complete :- Chief Minister agreed to halt on demolitions of the 6 SRA projects by the Principal Secretary (housing) till the enquiry report comes and action taken. They will take action on the fraudulent cases related to SRA. The enquiry has been promised to be completed by 15th May, 2013.

4.      Mandala will be declared as the Pilot Project of Rajiv Awas Yojana in Mumbai. Chief Minister will talk to the Central Govt. to implement Rajiv Awas Yojana in Mumbai.

5.      Slum declaration process will be according to the earlier agreement between the Andolan and Government of Maharashtra in May, 2011.

6.      Chief Minister agreed to take Mandala as the Pilot Project of Rajiv Awas Yojana and to talk to the Central Government on RAY.

7.      They  ensured all ongoing SRA projects will be complied with all conditions of LOI and in cases of Fraud documents, LOI will be withdrawn.

Golibar Demolition Protests spread in Maharashtra- Andolan lays Seize to CM Residence in Mumbai

Andolan lays Seize to CM Residence in Mumbai

Protests in Different parts of Maharashtra

Dialogue with Secretary Housing Over, now Over to CM

April 12, Mumbai / New Delhi : Today is the ninth day of indefinite fast by Medha Patkar and 7th day of indefinite fast by Madhuri Shivkar in Golibar, Mumbai. Late in the evening yesterday Sanjay Nirupam, MP came to the dharna site and expressed his solidarity with the Andolan and said he will do his best to address the issues at hand. People from different Bastis had kept pouring in to the dharna site but also getting restless and so they decided to lay seize to Chief Minister‘s residence. Chief Minister, Shri Prithvi Raj Chavan spoke to Medha ji in the morning and agreed to meet a delegation.

Today morning nearly 1000 people from different Bastis parked themselves infront of CM’s house and refused to move unless and until he talked to them. Meanwhile, in morning we got a call from Principal Secretary Housing, Mr. Devashish Chakravarty to have a dialogue with the Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan (GBGB) representatives. A delegation went and met with them at 11 am. The meeting was joined by CEO, SRA Mr. Deshmukh and other officials. They agreed to most of the demands of the Andolan but bactracked on the demand of self redevelopment by Ganesh Krupa Housing Society, who paid for the land in 2003. As per the law they can claim self development but the authorities are not sure, even though CEO SRA on another meeting two days ago, see below, had agreed to this. As we write this update to you, the delegation is still there and waiting for the written order from them.

Once the written document is collected, a delegation will go and meet the Chief Minister. One the meeting is over Andolan will decide the next steps.

Since, morning, protests have been held by different organisations and supporters of the Andolan at different places in Maharashtra – Pune, Satara, Maangaon, Ahmadnagar and other places.

Late in the evening yesterday on the 7th day of the Indefinite fast i.e. on 10th April, 2013, Sh. Nirmal Deshmukh, CEO, SRA called for a meeting with delegation from the fast site to discuss on the demands. Addl. Collector (Encroachment), Mr. Thackrey, Secretary, SRA, Mr. Milind Bohrikar, Sub-Registrar, SRA and other concerned officers from SRA (Slum Redevelopment Authority) were present during the discussion with the delegation by CEO, SRA.

1. Discussion started from Ganesh krupa Society Redevelopment Plan. The society has already paid amount of Rs. 5 lakh 4 Thousand towards the cost of land to the Collector in 2003. As per records the land belongs to the society. The Society now demands for self development. CEO, SRA agreed in principle on this and has agreed to talk to the Chief Minister and Principal Secretary, Housing on this.

2. CEO, SRA has agreed to the demand to stop demolition till the enquiry of the 6 societies are going on under the Principal Secretary, Housing.

3. He has even agreed to talk to the Chief Minister and Principal Secretary, Housing on the issue of Slum Declaration and Providing civic amenities to the bastis and implementation of Rajiv Awas Yojana for 21 bastis.

The delegation has demanded to take Mandala in Mumbai as the Pilot project for Rajiv Awas Yojana.

Corruption from the side of SRA can be clearly seen from the SRA side regarding the land transaction of GaneshKrupa Society of Golibar. In 2003, the Society paid the money to the govt. and the land now belongs to the residents of the society. This was clearly admitted by the SRA when they met the delegation yesterday. “When the land belongs to the residents of the Society, how the Shivalik ventures can demolish the houses built over it” said by the residents of the Society. In 1997, this matter has been published in the gazetteer of Maharashtra which supports the claim.

Dr Yamini Thankachi’s complaint against Kerala Ex-Minister, K B Ganesh Kumar of Domestic Violence #Vaw

From,                                                                                     01-04-2013

Dr Yamini Thankachi

TN H4, Tagore Nagar,

J Lane, Vazhuthacaud

Trivandrum-695014

To,

The Hon’ble Chief Minister

Government of Kerala.

Subject: My personal disposal before you on 7th March 2013 (subsequent to my telephonic complaint on 23-02-2013) regarding criminal assault and mental torture inflicted by my husband, Mr K B Ganesh Kumar, Minister for Forest, Sports and Cinema and the petition on the same dated 7th march 2013.

Respected Sir,

I humbly request you Sir, to look into my following predicament and take immediate action against Mr. K.B Ganesh Kumar, Minister for Forest, Sports and Cinema.

I am married to Mr. K.B Ganesh Kumar (GK) for the past 19 years and in the wedlock, we have two children, aged 15 and 5 years.  Our marital life has been under rock even from early days of our marriage. We had almost parted our ways in the year 2001. But considering my child’s future and his apologetic gestures I decided to resume our conjugal relationship. But now it has come to a point that I can no more bear mental and physical cruelty inflicted on me by my husband.

Being a cine artist, he has lured many women earlier and now he is constantly engaged in having promiscuous relationships by exploiting his position as a Minister of ruling party.

He is not taking care nor is he concerned about the family welfare. In spite of having the means and being well placed he never took proper or adequate care of the family and that amounts to cruelty.

As a wife I have been silently suffering all this economic, emotional and physical harm done to me but the most recent incident (which I have already narrated to you over phone and also in person) that happened on 22-02-2013 had been so shocking and painful for me to bear even now. On 21-02-2013, as our eldest son was not in the house, my husband asked me to help him to install an application in his phone (my son used to help him with this otherwise). While flipping through the phone, I accidentally saw the following messages.

  1. Kannu mudiyalum nee thane, kannu thurannalum nee thane, ninte mathram
  2. Rajine rajinte vazhi enniku ente vazhi- (about some person she had had an affair with)
  3. Annanode ( She called GK annan) ente relationship transparent aavanam athu kondu njan ellam thurannu paryunnu. Rajumaayi oru bhandhavum ennikku illa because ini only u r there in my mind because I love you very much. Umma.

My hands literally trembled when I saw this. When I confronted him about the messages, I got an evasive reply from him. And I left the situation like that.

But on 22-02-2013, a person came home in the evening furiously, and started shouting at my husband. He confronted my husband with instances of his wife being taken around by my husband discreetly. He told GK how he had one day driven the white Swift that he owned- 6777 to the flat at 4.30pm after calling her. How she had waited till the kids were back and told them to study while she went for her pleasure trip with GK. How the Minister himself drove the car to his official building “Ajantha” opposite to Raj Bhavan. How he went and parked the car way behind the building and how daringly in an official building with a security guard and a policeman on duty, the Minister went inside with this woman and then left her back at the flat in the same car at 6.30pm. He also said that if GK wanted details about what he did to his wife inside the bedroom, he can tell him that too. Then GK knew he was trapped, he right away fell at this man’s feet and repeatedly said ‘maap, maap, maap, ennodu kshamikanam, thettu patti poyi” (Sorry, Sorry, pardon me, I made a mistake).  I stood there shell shocked. After few seconds, I left the scene unaware of what happened subsequently.

I went back to the office room, weeping uncontrollably thinking of my ill fate. After few minutes my husband came to the room and locked it from inside. In broken words, still weeping, I sought an explanation from him for what I heard just then. To my utter surprise, without making any attempt to console me or feeling guilty of his infidelity, he just started hitting and beating me continuously. He manhandled me by pushing my head towards the wall. He punched, kicked and beat me. He tried to strangulate me further and gasping for breath I tried to push him away and I cried aloud for help. As he anticipated that people would come by hearing me, he finally opened the door and left. Both my children were shocked spectators of this event. He acted as if nothing has happened and left to Ernakulam soon for shooting.

My husband had physically abused me many a times even in front of his family members and I have stood there and prayed that he should kill me so that my ordeal ends that day. But this time I have decided to react to his misdeeds and immediately informed his family members as well you Sir.

Soon my right thumb had swollen due to hematoma, my left fourth toe was swollen, my back was aching, neck paining, there was contusion in the forehead left side, and bruises all over the body.  I went to SK hospital where the duty doctor examined and tied a bandage and prescribed medicines. By night, the swelling became more acute and there was hematoma, so I went again to the doctor and had it examined. I took medication and my right hand is still bandaged for immobilization.

I am aware that he has a very strong criminal mind and he will not stop at anything. Since the matter is in public now, he is quite agitated and I fear for my life and safety of my children. I may be given enough security and personal protection.

This violence at home has to be condemned and criminal action has to be initiated against him. He has gone to the extent of attempting to murder me. How can he be a Minister of State, a role model for the state and yet behave this way to his wife and children? Can the Government turn a blind eye to the misdeeds and criminal activity done by a Minister? I hope not.

Hence, In the interest of justice, I besiege you Sir, for initiating quick criminal action against Mr. K.B Ganesh Kumar and ensure security and personal protection for me and my family. I have been subjected to physical and mental torture from my husband for all these years and it still continues.

Since I was advised by you Sir and mediators directed by you Mr Shibu Baby John, Minister of Labour & Rehabilitation, Mr T Balakrishnan, M D INKEL, Mr R. Jayaprakash, Secretary General LIC Development Officers union, that I should not rush with any litigation and was promised that measures will be taken to see to that justice will be given and security would be given to me, I had not given any written complaint so far.

Anticipating a quick action,

Yours Sincerely,

(Dr Yamini Thankachi)
