Aligarh mother killed by mob for allowing daughter to wear jeans #Vaw #WTFnews

A 55-year-old woman was beaten to death by a mob in Aligarh on Tuesday
because she allowed her college-going daughter to wear jeans. Shockingly,
the mob was led by a woman.

It happened in Jwalajipuram colony of Mallrose bypass area in Aligarh where
one Phulwati raided the house of her neighbour Netrapal Dubey along with her
aides and killed Dubey’s wife, also the mother of 20-year-old Gunjan,
Kamlesh.

Netrapal and Gunjan have been admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
Phulwati and her aide Ravindra Singh have been arrested and sent to jail for
killing Kamlesh.

Netrapal, a driver, told the police that Phulwati, who lived in his
neighbourhood, used to object to Gunjan’s wearing jeans.

“My daughter is an undergraduate student and she feels comfortable in jeans.
Other girls of her college also wear jeans. But Phulwati, wife of a
contractor, came to me one day and asked to prevent her from wearing jeans
because it was vitiating the atmosphere in the colony. She said her own sons
stare at her because of her jeans. She also told me that other people in the
area would start eve-teasing my daughter if I didn’t stop her”, he said.

“On Tuesday evening, she tried to misbehave with my daughter. We didn’t
react because she had connection with criminals. Phulwati was prepared to
kill Gunjan and that is why she along with half a dozen of her associates
carrying rifles reached my house in the night, searching for my daughter.
They attacked my wife with the butt of a rifle when she came in between. She
died on the spot. Then they attacked me and my daughter,” he added.

Dayanand Mishra, Superintendent of Police, said, “The incident took place
because some people misbehaved with a college-going girl. As per report,
they  were angry because she used to wear jeans. We have arrested Phulwati
and Ravindra, who were a part of the mob. Manhunt is on to nab other accused
persons.”

DELHI – Protest by women’s groups at Jantar Mantar @April22 #Vaw #Rape

Since the December 2012 gang rape case in Delhi, many cases of violence against women and girl are being reported with frightening regularity. The shocking incident of sexual assault and brutalization of the 5 year old girl in Delhi and that of the 6 year old girl raped and murdered in Aligarh are the two recent ones that have been reported. Over and over again, the police has failed to discharge its duties and has proved itself to be corrupt, ineffective and often violent.

In case after case, women, their relatives and supporters continue to be harassed and those protesting inaction of the police are being thrashed. In the Delhi case, we protest the calculated delay in filing an FIR, attempt at bribing the family and the audacity in assaulting the woman protester. We also protest the physical violence perpetrated by the police in Aligarh on women protestors, as well as the insensitive remarks of the SSP (Aligarh), Amit Pathak about the little girl who was murdered. Suspending police personnel is mere eyewash and NOT enough! We have to make sure that all those who have attempted at subverting justice are chargesheeted and dismissed. We have to hold police personnel accountable under the various provision of the newly promulgated Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013. We also demand that police reforms be initiated and put in place.

Friends, comrades join the protest organised by women’s groups and progressive groups on Monday 22nd April 2013 at 12.30 pm at Jantar Mantar.

Mobilise and come in large numbers. Bring your banners and placards.

In solidarity,

Aligarh is 330 kms from Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh.

The child’s body was found this morning and in a few hours, nearly a hundred protestors gathered in the neighbourhood shouting slogans against the police. Officers used batons on the crowd, and attacked the girl’s parents.

Execution of rapists in public, ‘sober’ dress for girls: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to Justice Verma #Vaw #WTFnews

PTI : New Delhi, Sun Jan 06 2013, 21:58 hrs

Execution of rapists in full public glare, abolition of co-education and “sober and dignified” dress for girls are among the 11 suggestions made by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to Justice J S Verma Committee on ensuring safety and security to women.

In a statement, JIH said it welcomed the government decision to set up committees to review the present anti-rape law and find out measures to make the society safe for the women against the backdrop of the gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl in Delhi.

It expressed hope the committees will reach the root of the “disease” and find out the cure. The organisation gave 11 suggestions to the three-member panel, which has been asked by the government to submit its report in a month.

“There should be provision for capital punishment for heinous crimes such as rape. These punishments should be given in public and there should be opportunity for people to witness the same so that it might act as deterrent to such heinous crimes.

“Co-education should be abolished and proper education facilities meant exclusively for women should be available at all level of education. Educational institutions should prescribe sober and dignified dress for girls,” the statement said.

The JIH also suggested that physically intimacy should only be permitted to those who are married.

“All sex outside marriage including live-in-relationship should be declared illegal and punishable,” the statement issued by Nusrat Ali, Secretary General of JIH, said.

The organisation was of the view that proper transport facilities for woman should be made available particularly in towns and cities, and police reforms should be implemented at the earliest.

“Marriage should be made easy and timely marriage should be encouraged. All forms of dowry should be abolished; all unnecessary expenditures be curbed and made punishable,” the JIH statement said.

“Electronic and print media, TV programmes, films and advertisements should avoid exposure of women and it should be made punishable.

“Alcohol, the root of all evils and crimes particularly against women, should be completely banned in the whole country. Criminal laws in this regard should be made more stringent; the judicial procedure be simplified and made speedier,” it said.

Services of religious institutions and leaders should be sought to reform society, inculcate moral values and bring awareness against crimes especially among the new generation, JIH demanded
